Mrs. Folks

Mr. Folks said, "But no one is counting, right?"

This month we will be celebrating our 28th anniversary! My oldest daughter said we should introduce ourselves. (We are getting all sorts of comments and helps from our children.) So, I will take this opportunity to introduce "The Folks".

It is said that the 28th wedding anniversary is frequently a year of major adjustment. This is often a time of change with grown-up children charting their own course in life (AKA "adulting") and we find more time for ourselves. With four of our children out of the house and in various places around the country - one of those already married! - this will certainly be a year of change even with two still at home.

Our story begins with an elopement to Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Elvis wasn't available but we did get a fast-talking preacher that was probably not super dignified, and wedding pictures at the Excalibur. This led to six children (and now a son-in-law), 6 dogs, a snake, schools of fish, and several hermit crabs, 5 houses, 3 major moves around the country, and a million projects. I am not joking! There were very few times when we were not in the middle of some project or another. Of those, my least favorite is the hundreds of rocks we have moved around our property here in New York. But that is a story for another time. Many of these projects happened by choice, others by necessity - see "basement remodel thanks to flooding", or "kitchen remodel due to water damage" for examples.

Mr. Folks often says we are two halves of a brain. Over the years we have learned to work together - combining our strengths to do what was needed to have a comfortable home and raise our children.

Over the years we have gutted and remodeled two of our houses. We learned to build, do electrical and plumbing, drywall, tiling, and other DIY home projects. We are wrapping up a project right now because our roof leaked last year. Mr. Folks and I also enjoy gardening together and making our yard beautiful (except those darn rocks!)

Last year we even built a green house and finally put in a fenced garden to keep the critters out. We will be starting our plants later this month so look for those updates!

There has also been all sorts of wood working over the years from furniture to a treehouse in one of our large oak trees. Our oldest son helped us this past December as we turned our garage into Santa's work shop - we will be sharing this project in the coming month. Mr. Folks has taught me that the having the right tool for the job is important, but I'm starting to think that's just an excuse to get new tools. He is excited to share his tool discoveries as well.

After buying our first camera we started documenting our lives with thousands of pictures and video. Thousands of pictures later I have found a love for photo editing (especially old photographs) and even use my photography skills at work. I leave Mr. Folks in the realm of video editing. With the lack of school concerts and events he has had a little break but this venture will get him back working on his skills with Final Cut. One of our lovely daughters took on the role of showing us up in this area as a photojournalist. We are excited to see how she progresses and surpasses us in her photography skills.

This year we have starting crafting together (because of the wedding) and even created a shop on Etsy. If you've been following us, you also know we do some droning and have even started dabbling in 3D printing. Watch for our new adventures from our "maker cave" - formerly known as the "craft room".

Beyond building and making, we bike, hike, and exercise side by side. Sometimes I even keep up with Mr. Folks. We will bring you stories and adventures from our "pain cave".

We cook together and found a love for food science and experimentation. A lot of this seems to involve BBQ. We plan on sharing what we have learned and get your mouth watering with pictures from our "meat cave".

Along with the theme of major change after our 28 years of marriage we are going out of our comfort zone and sharing this part of our lives with all of you. We will share our current projects and many from our past. Luckily we have documented everything with our photography.

Feel free to comment, ask questions, and let us know what you think. We look forward to sharing what we have learned as we continue to count the seconds, minutes, hours, and days of our lives.
